Sustainability King LouieSustainability King Louie

King Louie wants to make a maximum sustainable product. We see this as a continuous process of improvement and keep taking steps in our entire production and distribution process. Think of choices of raw materials, production processes, logistics and ways of doing business. These are our main points of attention in the field of sustainability:

Longlasting products

We develop products based on the vision that they are timeless items that should last long. High-quality items that are given much time as to the design of the right fit and finding the right quality of fabric. This results in items that can be worn with pleasure for years and will not go ‘out of fashion’ quickly, thanks to the vintage inspiration.

Fair production

We find it important that King Louie products are manufactured in a socially responsible way and under fair labor conditions. For this reason we are a member of Fair Wear Foundation. We have intensive contacts with our suppliers and aim at long-lasting and durable collaborations. With some manufacturers we have worked for over 20 years. These manufacturers work according to the strict rules of Fair Wear Foundation and are checked extensively each year through audits. Transparency is important to us. For this reason we are mentioning the data of our manufacturers on our website as of now. You will find this information on the product detail page of a garment or on the page about our manufacturers.

Green team

Since 2019 we have had an internal team focusing on sustainability. This team consists of employees from management team, the design, logistics and marketing departments, and is constantly looking for improvement options and opportunities in the field of sustainability. This way we make sustainability a point of focus within the various departments of our company.

Goals & achievements

Increase the percentage of sustainable materials

We aim to use more sustainable materials for all our collections. Since the SS20 collection (started January 2020) 33% of our collections is made of sustainable materials including organic cotton, recycled polyester, Tencel and EcoVero. This is double when compared to a couple of years ago. This season, our sustainable collection is therefore more extensive than ever. King Louie classics such as the Lapis and Cottonclub group are now made from sustainable materials.

For the first time, our denim line is also made of organic cotton this season. The factory that makes our denim fabric uses the so-called D-Clear technology, which limits the use of water during the production and the dyeing process. Compared to traditional denim this new technology uses 40% less water during the dyeing process and 83% less during finishing. Use of harmful chemicals is also largely avoided and this technology uses 94% less chemicals.

It is our ambition to have a collection consisting of 50% sustainable materials by 2022. We also aim at increasing the percentage of organic cotton used in our collections from 46% to 75% by 2022.

Keep innovating

We find it important to keep exploring new sustainable business models. We study the options regarding our own repair service and facilitating the resale of second-hand King Louie items through our own channels. Last year we started a pilot around the borrowing of clothes and organized our first Swap to Shop event. People could donate clothes for Dress for Success and then select a new King Louie item. This way, we could both provide people with a fine job interview outfit and make our own customers happy with a new King Louie item and stimulate a more conscious use of clothing. We want to develop these new, sustainable ways of clothing consumption further in the coming years.

The environment

King Louie pursues an active policy of avoiding dangerous chemicals within its supply chain. REACH and POP legislation are European regulations that describe what limits companies must meet in their use of chemical substances. The result is a so-called RSL (Restricted Substances List), which we make mandatory for all our manufacturers. The RSL limits or prohibits 22 groups of chemicals, including AZE dyes, Nickel, Chrome VI, perfluorinated chemicals and Phthalates. In many cases our RSL goes beyond legal requirements. The independent and worldwide VERITAS agency makes sample checks if our suppliers meet the RSL requirements. In addition, we work with many companies that meet the OEKO-TEX criteria.
